A slightly more rational approach to the Kimi/RBR rumours

I am sitting in a computer room, in front of the slowest computer I have ever used in my life. Yes, even worse that my 5-year-old laptop. Being worried that any attempt to start Matlab in order to do some work will give it the final blow, I've instead been thinking about the latest rumour of Kimi talking to Red Bull about possibly replacing Mark Webber.

To be honest, I don't buy it. If McLaren doesn't want to pay £20 million for Kimi, why would Red Bull? They already have one very talented young driver, and a teammate that has challenged him more than anyone expected. And I bet they both are much cheaper than Kimi.

It also doesn't make any sense for Red Bull to be involved in such rumours at such a crucial stage of the championship, when they need Webber's support. They renewed his contract at a time where he was still in the championship hunt. Of course, Kimi wasn't available at the time but, let's be honest, everyone kind of knew he wouldn't be driving for Ferrari in 2010. Mark's recent lack of form is more due to bad luck than bad driving (story of his life) and I would expect him to be even more competitive next year, having fully recovered from his accident. Red Bull can be sure that they will have a very competitive line-up next year and they have made it clear that they are not looking to change it.

Kimi has found himself in an awkward situation. Having declared that he wants a top drive for next year, he has closed the door on a few teams and, with Rosberg's move to Brawn almost a given, his only real choice is McLaren. McLaren knows that and that doesn't help his negotiations. The Red Bull rumours are so convenient for him that one would assume his manager is the one who started them.

Oh, wait, he is.
